Marion Crowell awarded 2012 Tennessee Bowl of Hygeia

KINGSPORT — Pharmacist Marion Crowell of Kingsport was awarded the “Bowl of Hygeia Community Service Award” at the 125th Annual Convention of the Tennessee Pharmacists Association (TPA) in Panama City Beach, Florida.

Now in its 54th year of operation, this award is sponsored by the American Pharmacists Association Foundation and the National Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations, with support from Boehringer Ingelheim. It is presented annually to recognize pharmacists with outstanding records of civic involvement in their communities. It is recognized as North American Pharmacy’s most prestigious state level award.

Dr. Crowell is a pharmacist at the Brookside Pharmacy in Kingsport. Since 1966, her passion has been to encourage young people to continue with their education so they can achieve their career goals. One way she reaches students is through the guidance office at Dobyns-Bennett High School, where, since 1989, she has been providing a variety of helpful resources for students seeking a college education. Her time and dedication to students was acknowledged in 1993, when she was named the Outstanding National School Volunteer for Dobyns-Bennett High School and recognized by the National Association of Partners in Education.

Dr. Crowell was also instrumental in establishing a scholarship that provides financial aid to women returning to college. In 2001, she was named the Pharmacist of the Year for the First District. She served six years as scholarship chairman for the Daughters of the American Revolution, and has served as president of the American Association of University Women.

A Greenwood, South Carolina native, Dr. Crowell is a graduate of the University of South Carolina College of Pharmacy, where she was president of Kappa Epsilon Pharmacy Fraternity. She has been a preceptor of ETSU Gatton College of Pharmacy students since its inception and serves on the awards and scholarship committees.

She and her husband, Jim, have two sons, Dr. Alexander Crowell and Stephen Crowell.
